"My journey as a mosaic artist began with creating mixed media functional art and furniture. When the curator of a regional art show requested a series of ten distinct chairs, I was challenged to create two in mosaic – one using porcelain and tile, the other stones and seashells – and I was hooked!"
"I am currently focusing on the creation of fine art mosaics. I prefer to work spontaneously, and am driven by the endless possibilities of working with a broad range of materials. My greatest joy in the mosaic process is often found in searching for and selecting the materials that will inspire the design of a piece. The work then becomes a captivating exploration with sometimes surprising results. Since my designs are intuitive, I am witnessing the evolution of a mosaic as I am creating it."
Kim Porter, a native New Yorker who relocated to the New Jersey shore, is a self-taught artist currently working in mosaic. Glass, ceramic, gemstones, pebbles, seashells, wood, metal, paper, paint and fabric all find their way into her artwork as she transforms ordinary materials into extraordinary pieces.
Her unrestrained use of unexpected elements engages the viewer with the interplay of reflectivity, texture, space and scale, while exploring the relationship between color and emotion.
Kim has exhibited and sold her work professionally since 1999. Her pieces can be found in private collections throughout the United States and the U.K.
